Most post-production specialists who work with large files have used video proxy files at one time or another. Because RAW video files shot in high resolution are huge and unwieldy, most video pros transcode lower-resolution copies of that RAW footage to serve as proxies for offline editing and related post work.
Many pros also choose to send proxy files using a cloud file transfer solution while the original media is shoved into a box and shipped over on a hard drive.
For example, it’s far quicker (and easier) for a video editor to begin editing with proxy media. They can relink the original files later, rather than wait on the camera footage to arrive.
But, sharing proxies isn’t as simple as uploading files onto WeTransfer and hitting send. A proper proxy workflow requires three things from a file transfer solution:
- Ability to send large files: Despite being low-res media, proxy files are still heavy. Make sure your file transfer tool can comfortably send a large number of gigabytes from your computer.
- Fast, reliable delivery: Again, your team is waiting on proxies to begin their work. Your proxy clips need to arrive fast and without any hiccups (corrupted files, missing links, etc.).
- Proper folder maintenance: By far the most important element when sending proxies — maintaining folder structure. Proxy files are copies of camera originals and hence, they need identical folder structures to link media properly.

Many non-linear editing platforms such as Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro X now have the power to handle 4K, 6K, or 8K RAW files. But you also need uber-fast workstations and storage to add effects, grade color, or make cuts productively.
Most consumer-grade machines don’t have the core count or memory volume for that.
Without proxies, video editors and other post specialists in these situations face extremely laggy video, dropped frames, long processing times, and – maybe worst of all – a building sense of frustration and annoyance.
Depending on the platform, there are several ways to create proxies (also sometimes known as “optimized files”) for post work. Offline editors can create proxies using Avid Media Composer, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, and other software.
Creating proxies using Premiere Pro is another relatively simple process done in the project panel. Here’s how:
- Select the desired items to be proxied in the project panel
- Select ‘Create Proxies’ from the context menu
- In the Create Proxies dialog box, select one of Adobe’s built-in transcoding presets (i.e. 1024×540 H.264) or add your own preset via the ‘Add Ingest Preset’ button
- Click OK in the dialog box
Offline proxies attached to each corresponding project item are then created in Adobe Media Encoder, with any edits made to proxy files automatically applied to full project items. To ensure proxy files automatically display in your timeline, select ‘Enable Proxies’ in preferences — add the toggle proxies button to your playback bar.

#1: MASV’s TCP-based Transfers Guarantee Intact Folder Structure
MASV is a Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)-based large file transfer platform. TCP relies on three-way handshake connections, which ensure data transfer only begins when the target machine has acknowledged a successful connection. This, in turn, ensures transferred data is received successfully, without errors or glitches, and in the correct order.
That’s a fundamental difference between TCP and User Datagram Protocol (UDP)-based data transfer, which doesn’t guarantee data integrity. TCP-based transfers also don’t require firewall reconfigurations or other technical tweaks.
MASV’s TCP-based transfers guarantee file and folder trees arrive in the same structure as they were sent…but why does this matter?
The Importance of Strict Proxy Folder Structure
Strict and systematic folder and file organization is crucial for efficient online and offline video editing. To keep large projects organized, many video editors start with an overall project folder, then populate it with separate subdirectories for video, audio, and project files.
Because proxies are closely linked to project files, their file structures must be identical – even when transferred to other users. Keeping proxy folder structures intact ensures that when remote editors or colorists work on proxies, those updates are automatically applied when the project file owner reopens the originals.
Unfortunately, many large file transfer solutions don’t preserve folder structures fully intact. And that’s just one reason why MASV is so appropriate for sending proxies to editors, colorists, clients, and other stakeholders.
And that’s not all.
Since MASV maintains the integrity of folder trees, it is recommended that you don’t zip files prior to upload. File zipping is a big reason why many transferred ZIP folders reveal corrupted files inside. The probability of corruption increases the larger the file sizes are.
#2: MASV Has Virtually No File Size Limits
Proxies are usually much smaller than their originals – especially when RAW high-resolution footage is involved – but not always. Source footage in Premiere Pro that’s already compressed will, for example, result in larger proxy file sizes. The tradeoff is that the proxies are less compressed and much faster to decompress/run inside the editing platform.
That means sending proxies to partners or clients can sometimes take up just as much or even more transfer bandwidth than your originals.
And even if your proxy files are much smaller than the original raw footage, it doesn’t mean they’re featherweights. Multiple proxy files can add up quickly and result in immense folder structures.
