Because that\u2019s what codecs do: Compress and decompress.<\/p>\n<p>Codecs for video and <span class=\"link-annotation-unknown-block-id-857532257\">audio<\/span> offer either \u201clossy\u201d or \u201clossless\u201d compression. Lossy compression sacrifices some of the file\u2019s data to make the file more efficient, while lossless compression contains all the original data. Ericsson says that number will increase to 80 percent by 2027.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The above is great news for video creators and consumers, but the problem is that video takes up a ton of space.
