But it\u2019s still a workhorse in the video industry because it provides relatively high-quality video while using far less bandwidth than higher resolutions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Thanks to modern codecs like H.265 and AV1, 1080p content can be compressed extremely efficiently, delivering high quality at just 3 to 5 Mbps (a bandwidth requirement easily handled by today&#8217;s average internet speeds).<\/li>\n<li>With average broadband speeds in the range of 100 to 150 Mbps, what once was demanding now feels trivial.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On the opposite end of the spectrum sits 8K, firmly established as the high-end standard for premium video content. With 16 times more pixels than 1080p \u2013 33 million versus 2 million \u2013 8K requires 50 to 100-plus Mbps even when paired with advanced compression technologies.<\/p>\n<p>Despite advances in (with a minimum file size of 1GB). <strong>This includes a 42% (uploads) and 33% year-over-year (downloads) increase in video file sizes between 2024 and 2025, and an increase of nearly 100% from 2020 Most of which can\u2019t accommodate anything close to the highest resolutions upon playback. That and equipment cost constraints, of course.<\/p>\n<p>But while finding places to show 12K or 8K video are few and far between, some filmmakers prefer shooting with extremely high resolutions anyway.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because video professionals can shoot in 8K or 12K technology even for a sharper lower-resolution output; a process known as <span class=\"link-annotation-unknown-block-id-604007313\">oversampling<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>For example, A 12K sensor provides a crisper 8K image than a native 8K sensor; a 4K camera provides a better 2K image, and so on. Industry standard (ie. \u201cnormal-looking\u201d)\u00a0cinematic frame rates sit at 24 frames-per-second (fps). Broadcast content usually hangs at 30fps. Virtual and Live Event Production Screens<\/h3>\n<p>You may remember people <em><span data-token-index=\"1\" class=\"notion-enable-hover\" data-reactroot=\"\">freaking out<\/span><\/em> when Samsung announced The Wall at CES 2018. The consumer product featured a 146-inch display capable of hitting resolutions of 8K \u2014 mind-blowing for the rather quaint standards of the late 2010\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Fast-forward a couple years, however, and The Wall is now marketed as a full-on virtual production studio capable of reaching resolutions of 16K on a 1,000-inch screen.<\/p>\n<p>Such eye-popping numbers aren\u2019t even that surprising, however, when you consider the fast growth of virtual production stages regularly featuring such massive LED screens.<\/p>\n<p>As a rule, these large video screens require large files.<\/p>\n<p>The advent of powerful game engines such as Epic Games\u2019 Unreal Engine and proliferation of productions with heavier VFX requirements prompted Deloitte to recently dub virtual production \u201cthe future of content creation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>While the Mandalorian was one of the first major releases to use virtual production back in 2019, many big-name releases (such as <em>Dune<\/em>, <em>The Batman<\/em>, <em>The Suicide Squad<\/em>, <em>Black Adam<\/em>, and <em>Loki<\/em>) since have utilized the virtual production workflow.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-token-index=\"0\" class=\"notion-enable-hover\" data-reactroot=\"\">MELs Studios in Montreal<\/span><\/strong>, one of the world\u2019s largest and most popular <a href=\"https:\/\/massive.io\/filmmaking\/how-to-build-a-virtual-production-stage\/\" class=\"notion-link-token notion-enable-hover\" rel=\"noreferrer\" data-token-index=\"2\" data-reactroot=\"\"><span class=\"link-annotation-unknown-block-id-1972380115\">virtual production facilities<\/span><\/a>, uses a concave wall configuration 65 feet in diameter and 20 feet high.
