It combines this with other tools like motion capture to allow filmmakers to visualize and capture scenes in-camera that were traditionally created in post-production using blue or green screens, or matte paintings and backdrops.

The virtual set adjusts in real-time to match the perspective of different camera angles and movements, while a camera captures an actor performing in front of the screens.

Key features of virtual production include:

LED walls displaying dynamic, real-time backdrops.

Motion capture tracking actors’ movements for seamless integration.

Game engines enabling instant visualization and adjustments.

“Virtual production is a fantastic, versatile tool,” explains Richard Cormier, the former executive producer of virtual production at MELS Studios, a virtual production studio in Montreal. “And we’re just scratching the surface as we go.”

Virtual production vs. traditional production

“Traditional” production is much like an assembly-line; a process that involves each entity or department on a linear schedule. Because of the tight timelines involved, iterating or reshooting scenes is time-consuming and prohibitively expensive. Filmmakers often shoot scenes without a definite idea of how those scenes will ultimately look.

Virtual production is different. It’s a non-linear, more collaborative, and more iterative method of making video. It combines computer-aided production and real-time visualization tools such as game-engine technology, computer-generated imagery (CGI), virtual reality, and augmented reality to provide a “creative feedback loop in real-time.”

This can save production teams hours and allows for more certainty around look and feel during the pre-production and production phases.

There are several different types of virtual production:

Visualization: Prototype imagery to show the intent of a shot.

Performance capture: Recording the movements of actors or objects.

Hybrid virtual production: Using camera tracking technology and green screen.

Live LED wall, in-camera virtual production.

Virtual production can provide visuals and effects that simply weren’t possible just a few years ago.

What’s old is new again

Rear projection is a filmmaking technique that originated in the early 20th century, allowing filmmakers to create dynamic backgrounds for scenes shot in controlled environments. It involves projecting recorded footage onto a screen behind the actors, giving the illusion that the action is taking place in a moving car, a bustling city, or other far-off locations.

Despite its utility, however, rear projection often struggled with technical challenges such as mismatched lighting between foreground and background, or the appearance of a flat, two-dimensional look. But it remained a staple for decades, particularly for driving scenes.

Though largely replaced by blue and green screen technology in the latter half of the 20th century, rear projection’s principles of layering visuals in-camera remain foundational.

Virtual production is a revival of these ideas with LED walls and real-time rendering, proving that even in the age of high-tech innovation, the roots of classic techniques continue to shape filmmaking.

Virtual production studios are generally called LED volume stages, and they need a ton of space to operate: MELS Studios is home to LED screens 20 feet high and 65 feet in diameter.

At its core, virtual production marries the physical and virtual worlds to create immersive sets for video production. The physical world, in this case, consists of props and actors while the virtual world includes backgrounds, virtual lighting, and visual effects.

It’s often used for film and television, video games, and even commercial productions from outlets such as The Weather Channel.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_video src=”https://youtu.be/UgMJMNsn0xs” _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”default” box_shadow_style=”preset2″ locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_video][et_pb_text module_id=”what-is-virtual-production” _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”2514b1ee-af07-4bc3-a96b-c9aaa32f4a18″ text_font_size=”18px” text_line_height=”1.8em” header_3_font_size=”26px” custom_margin=”||||false|false” custom_margin_tablet=”||12px||false|false” custom_margin_last_edited=”off|desktop” custom_padding=”||||false|false” custom_padding_tablet=”||0px||false|false” custom_padding_phone=”0px||||false|false” custom_padding_last_edited=”off|desktop” global_colors_info=”{}”]

The technique has proven immensely popular since The Mandalorian made headlines as the first major virtual production in 2018, with more than 300 virtual stages now in existence (up from just three in 2019).

Research and Markets, a research firm, estimates the global virtual production market will grow at a 17.8 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) between 2022 and 2030.

However, one of the most revolutionary aspects of virtual production isn’t the existence of LED volumes, real-time rendering, or live camera tracking. Rather, it’s that visual effects are applied to scenes throughout the production process, including pre-production. And that high-quality effects and imagery are used from the project’s outset.

Filming is more or less camera-ready by the time shooting begins and iterations can take place at any time, providing more certainty and flexibility for filmmakers accustomed to compromising on quality and having to work with visual effects placeholders.

And visual effects and other assets are produced more collaboratively, instead of in siloes, allowing for cross-compatibility among different teams.

Indeed, thanks to virtual production, the old filmmakers’ mantra of “fix it in post” has become “fix it in pre.”

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text module_id=”what-is-virtual-production” _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”2514b1ee-af07-4bc3-a96b-c9aaa32f4a18″ text_font_size=”18px” text_line_height=”1.8em” header_3_font_size=”26px” custom_margin=”||||false|false” custom_margin_tablet=”||12px||false|false” custom_margin_last_edited=”off|desktop” custom_padding=”||||false|false” custom_padding_tablet=”||0px||false|false” custom_padding_phone=”0px||||false|false” custom_padding_last_edited=”off|desktop” global_colors_info=”{}”]

On-set roles at a virtual production studio

There several on-set roles that help facilitate virtual productions. At MELS in Montreal, Cormier says those roles include:

Tracking specialist

The tracking specialist has to fully understand the scope of the physical set because that determines what kind of tracking device and systems that get used, and where to position (or reposition) so the team can follow the camera in virtual and physical space.

“It’s easy to do a tracking system or calibrate the tracking system when nothing is moving,” Cormier explains, “but when we’re in a shoot, every aspect on set is moving every minute: a person, a piece of furniture, he core lighting equipment, camera equipment, etc.

“The tracking specialist requires a commanding presence and a knowledge of where stuff will be during the set.”

The tracking specialist also packages the data so it gets to the compositing department in decent shape. “It’s easy to have bad data” in virtual production, Cormier adds.

Chief operator

Responsible for the match, playback, and color timing. “Our chief operator is basically like a DJ in the middle of a production set,” he says. “They are shoulder to shoulder with the director and the first assistant director.”

Image specialist

Guides the rest of the crew through an encyclopedic knowledge base around lenses, cameras, and other equipment. The ability to create immersive, photo-realistic worlds on LED walls, with real-time adjustments, feels like stepping onto the holodeck.

With all these benefits wrapped in a shiny new package, it’s no wonder virtual production has captivated the industry’s imagination by providing the following advantages:

Flexibility: Create any location, any time – no travel required.

Real-time collaboration: Actors and crew can see the environment as it will appear on screen.

Cost savings (sometimes): Eliminates travel expenses and reduces the need for physical set construction.

Environmental benefits: Lower carbon footprint than traditional filmmaking methods.

Efficiency: Accelerates production timelines with immediate visual feedback.

Virtual production isn’t without its quirks and hiccups, however.While VP can streamline a lot, it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution and comes with some specific challenges:

High initial costs: Renting a virtual production stage featuring LED walls and associated technology requires significant investment.

Commitment to visuals: Changes to backgrounds post-shoot can require costly rotoscoping or re-renders; if creative decisions change after shooting, modifying virtual environments can be more expensive than traditional methods.

Spatial limitations: The physical size of LED stages restricts large-scale set designs.

Potential lack of location authenticity: Natural lighting, textures, and atmospheric elements are difficult to replicate on LED walls; travel to actual locations often results in richer, more dynamic visuals.

Lack of spontaneity: VP relies heavily on previsualization, leaving little room for improvisation on set.

Scale limitations: Large, expansive sets are challenging to create within the confines of VP stages.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text module_id=”what-is-virtual-production” _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”2514b1ee-af07-4bc3-a96b-c9aaa32f4a18″ text_font_size=”18px” text_line_height=”1.8em” header_3_font_size=”26px” custom_margin=”||||false|false” custom_margin_tablet=”||12px||false|false” custom_margin_last_edited=”off|desktop” custom_padding=”||||false|false” custom_padding_tablet=”||0px||false|false” custom_padding_phone=”0px||||false|false” custom_padding_last_edited=”off|desktop” global_colors_info=”{}”]

When to use virtual production (and when to skip it)

Virtual production might seem perfect for blockbuster VFX epics, but it’s often indie filmmakers who benefit most. Always weigh the upfront costs and potential limitations of VP against the needs of your project. While virtual production offers incredible advantages, blue and green screen techniques still reign supreme for large-scale sets and action-packed set pieces.

The secret to success? Knowing when VP enhances your project – and when traditional methods do it better.

When to use virtual production:

Indie films: Access pre-existing libraries of high-quality virtual environments at minimal cost levels the playing field for smaller productions.

Corporate and commercial projects: Fast turnarounds benefit from VP’s efficiency.

Experimental films: Push the boundaries of digital storytelling with interactive environments.

When to skip virtual production:

VFX-heavy films: Traditional blue/green screen techniques provide more control in post-production; larger physical sets can be built without spatial constraints.

Expansive outdoor scenes: Real-world locations offer authenticity and depth that VP struggles to match.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text module_id=”what-is-virtual-production” _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”2514b1ee-af07-4bc3-a96b-c9aaa32f4a18″ text_font_size=”18px” text_line_height=”1.8em” header_3_font_size=”26px” custom_margin=”||||false|false” custom_margin_tablet=”||12px||false|false” custom_margin_last_edited=”off|desktop” custom_padding=”||||false|false” custom_padding_tablet=”||0px||false|false” custom_padding_phone=”0px||||false|false” custom_padding_last_edited=”off|desktop” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Is building a virtual set the same as creating a traditional set?

The short answer is “no,” says Cormier. “We did a massive 3D set extension for a movie with Joaquin Phoenix called Disappointment Boulevard. We built a 3D cruise ship and the performers were here on stage on a 32 by 32-foot platform acting on the deck of the boat. We had an amazing marriage between the physical set and virtual set extension.”

For the cruise ship example Cormier mentioned above, the set designer calls MELS Studio and says, “Hey, for this scene, this is the deck chair I want to use, this is the umbrella and its color and texture. This is the material I’m going to be using.”

It’s the studio’s job to digitize that. If the set designer wants to put chairs in the background, they need to work with them to create a background layout that matches the physical foreground. They’ve got to work together at the same time.

This is contrary to a traditional visual effects workflow, where the footage is already shot, and the VFX artists have to make do. In that case there’s no interaction with the set designer at all.

This same process also works in reverse: Sometimes, the studio creates items that the set designer needs to replicate in the real world. In that case, they’ll create 3D models and send them to the designer for construction. If the script calls for something special, they’ll 3D print the item.

“It’s important to be agile,” Cormier says. “If we need to change a utensil two days before a shoot, we need to be able to digitize or get access to the 3D assets. The lines of communication need to be open and direct.

Filmmakers must also decide whether they create assets physically or digitally. If a table is required on set, will the foreman build another physical table, or will the virtual production studio duplicate an existing table and add it digitally?

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.7″ Models are continually refined to ensure they’re camera-ready by the time production begins.

The visualization phase also includes virtual scouting, which uses virtual cameras and digital props to create digital locations based on proposed sets.

Other elements of virtual production’s pre-production process include:

Previs: Like a traditional project, the previsualization stage allows for experimentation with lighting, camera angles and movements, and other elements.

Unlike a traditional project, previs in virtual production is a highly collaborative effort involving multiple stakeholders, including the cinematographer, director, and video editor.

Additionally, because of ongoing increases in image quality and computer performance, sequences and shots designed in previs are not far off the final-pixel image quality. For these and other reasons, previs is often dubbed “the beginning of production” in a virtual production workflow.

Techvis: Techvis helps VFX artists and others plan specific shots by using camera data and other information to determine the right camera lenses, placements, and movements via motion control. Here are a few of the main benefits of a virtual production pipeline:

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”18px” text_line_height=”1.8em” global_colors_info=”{}”]

1. Time and cost savings

Virtual scouting using VR headsets and other technology cuts down dramatically on travel time and cost.

Finalizing major creative decisions earlier in the process means crews are better prepared while actors are on set, making for a less onerous production.

It’s also far easier to adjust content on the fly as filming takes place, rather than bringing actors back for costly reshoots or spending hours on post-production rendering.

It lowers the cost of asset creation, as high-fidelity assets created early in the process can be used throughout the production cycle without having to be recreated at a higher resolution.

It can also lower the cost and effort required for asset management and tracking, since game engines typically have very strong built-in asset tracking systems.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”18px” text_line_height=”1.8em” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

2. Environmentally-conscious

Virtual environments can reduce the ecological impact of traditional productions by creating digital sets and props instead of physical ones, which contribute to waste and pollution. This also reduces travel time and distance. For example, if an actor in Los Angeles needs to reshoot a scene in the desert, it is more environmentally friendly to drive to a volume stage in L.A. than to travel by plane and car to reach the filming location.

And because game engines were designed with “multiplayer” in mind, conducting remote or multi-user collaborations with stakeholders in different physical locations comes second nature to virtual production technology. Unreal Engine, for example, uses Perforce Helix Core technology to provide version control on projects with potentially hundreds of collaborators.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”18px” text_line_height=”1.8em” global_colors_info=”{}”]

3. More refined creative ideas

Starting visuals and shot planning early in the process leads to more iterations and, ultimately, better visuals, environments, and shots. Virtual production offers more options to further refine creative ideas because of the ease in which real-time engines can iterate or customize shots and sequences.

Filmmakers can also lean on the real-time physics provided by game engines to design action sequences or camera movements in a sandbox where the real world’s laws of physics apply.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”18px” text_line_height=”1.8em” global_colors_info=”{}”]

4. Improved natural lighting

We already mentioned the benefits of ambient LED screen lighting — green screens are notoriously finicky about the type of lighting states they work well with, meaning more time is required in post to adjust effects and lighting.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”18px” text_line_height=”1.8em” global_colors_info=”{}”]

5. Real-time visibility

It’s much easier for the cast and crew to get an idea of how shots will look as they perform alongside the action on LED screens, as opposed to acting in front of a green screen and filling in backgrounds and effects later.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”18px” text_line_height=”1.8em” global_colors_info=”{}”]

6. Environmental control

Crews have complete control over the time of day, lighting, weather, traffic, and other variables that can come into play when shooting on location. Switching scenes and in a virtual environment is much easier (and faster).

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”18px” text_line_height=”1.8em” global_colors_info=”{}”]

7. More immersive environments

Virtual environments created for virtual production can be explored as a 360-degree environment using extended reality technology.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_cta title=”File Transfer for Video Production” Here are a few tips and best practices to keep in mind when starting your next project:

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”18px” text_line_height=”1.8em” global_colors_info=”{}”]

1. Invest in premium graphics hardware

As mentioned above, ensure you have a powerful GPU, such as a gaming PC with at least ten CPU cores and a GPU equivalent to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090. A more robust setup, such as the NVIDIA RTX A6000 Graphics Card combined with the Quadro Sync II Kit, is recommended for the nodes connected to the LED panel’s video processors.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”18px” text_line_height=”1.8em” global_colors_info=”{}”]

2. Scale back LED walls to save money

You don’t necessarily have to drop all the dough required to rent a full LED volume with enveloping ceilings and sidewalls. Sometimes, a single-wall LED is all you need. Just be aware that the type of wall you use will greatly impact the amount of ambient light emitted. Hemispherical domes, half-cube, and wall-with-wings setups are considered the best for emissive light, in that order.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”18px” text_line_height=”1.8em” custom_margin=”||||false|false” custom_padding=”||||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”]

3. Take advantage of programmable lighting

If you don’t have enough emissive light, the digital multiplex (DMX) protocol can be programmed to turn multicolor lights into effects lighting. Crews can program lighting specifications using DMX in the game engine or by using a lighting board.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”18px” text_line_height=”1.8em” custom_margin=”||||false|false” custom_padding=”||||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”]

4. Don’t forget color

Understanding color science, especially concerning your specific cameras and LED volume, is crucial to producing the most realistic-looking virtual environments and assets. Ignoring the finer points of colorimetry can lead to disastrous-looking visual artifacts in your final cut.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ custom_padding_last_edited=”on|phone” _builder_version=”4.14.7″ background_color=”#f2f4f9″ custom_margin=”||||false|false” custom_padding=”2.5em|20%|2.5em|20%|true|true” custom_padding_tablet=”1.5em|0%|1.5em|0%|true|true” custom_padding_phone=”|0%||0%|true|true” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row custom_padding_last_edited=”on|desktop” _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”7b1bf5ad-cc2a-4448-981c-4963d88bd6e8″ custom_margin=”||||false|false” custom_padding=”||0px||false|true” custom_padding_tablet=”|0%||0%|false|true” custom_padding_phone=”|0%||0%|false|true” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.9.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_icon font_icon=”||fa||900″ icon_color=”#444444″ icon_width=”35px” align=”left” module_id=”masv-virtual-production” _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”default” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_icon][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”2514b1ee-af07-4bc3-a96b-c9aaa32f4a18″ text_font_size=”18px” text_line_height=”1.8em” header_3_font_size=”26px” custom_margin=”||||false|false” custom_margin_tablet=”||12px||false|false” custom_margin_last_edited=”off|desktop” custom_padding=”||||false|false” custom_padding_tablet=”||0px||false|false” custom_padding_phone=”0px||||false|false” custom_padding_last_edited=”off|desktop” global_colors_info=”{}”]

MASV and Virtual Production: A Perfect Match

Virtual production is highly productive for remote teams who collaborate on projects globally.
