I needed a portal where someone could just drop footage and it goes to the destination I specify. So we reached out to people we knew at Frame.io, and they said: ‘You need to talk to MASV.’

The Challenge: Smoothly Ingesting High Volumes of User-Generated Content Into Frame.io
The Diamond Bros were asked to produce a documentary on the Scottish rock band, Frightened Rabbit.
The band put out a call to its fans to submit user-generated content (UGC) for the documentary. But ingesting all that content, without hours of manual labor, wasn’t easy—until they found MASV.
Challenge #1: The need for fast, reliable, and scalable file transfer
The major problem The Diamond Bros needed to solve was ingesting thousands of user-generated video and image files in a short time frame, submitted by hundreds of fans from around the world, into the Frame.io media asset manager.
The file transfer solution had to be reliable and performant in these kinds of high-volume conditions. The team considered Google Drive, but it was dismissed as “not an elegant solution” whose strict upload and file size limits would almost certainly cause issues.
Challenge #2: The need for intuitive upload portals
It’s next to impossible to collect UGC en masse without an easy way for fans to upload content.
“I needed a portal where somebody can just drop footage and it just goes the place I want it,” explains Josh, “And where I’m not exposing my users to other private information within the project.”
But collecting thousands of small mobile phone video clips, photos, and other small files from numerous fans was only half the battle: The content also had to get into their system, while staying trackable.
“Who sent what? How long is it? What format is it in? Where’s it going to go? Trying to figure out where the asset came from—there’s no reason why this has to be a manual process that occupies one person’s time 40 hours a week to try and figure this out.”
Challenge #3: The need for a smooth integration with Frame.io
While The Diamond Bros originally considered using a Zapier integration with Google Drive to push content to Frame.io, this workflow proved problematic because clips didn’t retain metadata. The technical problems associated with Google Drive’s integration with Frame.io also became too much to handle.
The team needed a simple, reliable, and secure method to get content from its upload portal into Frame.io with all metadata retained, and without manual uploads and downloads.
Challenge #4: The need for an open, cloud-based platform
The workflow The Diamond Bros ultimately decided on required an open, cloud-based platform able to accommodate an integration with third-party tools, such as the Pipedream automation platform, to associate submission information with footage uploaded to a MASV Portal and sent to Frame.io.
Note: When someone uploads a file through a MASV Portal, MASV collects metadata via a Custom Form—a set of fields you define. MASV then generates a sidecar file that includes all that information and is retained when sent to storage.
The Solution: Automated UGC Ingest Into Frame.io
The Diamond Bros and MASV developed a custom content ingestion pipeline involving Jotform to gather consent sign off and collect other metadata, and Pipedream as an intermediary between Jotform and their branded MASV Portal:
- Submitters first entered their name, contact information, and signature in an online Jotform consent form.
- A script in Pipedream next pushed the metadata entered in Jotform to a MASV Portal.
- Once their consent form was finalized, users were automatically sent to the MASV Portal to upload their content (the ability for users to add metadata to the Portal was disabled to eliminate the possibility of conflicting information).
- All content uploaded to the Portal was automatically associated with the information provided in Jotform, along with the tracking number for each file.
- The MASV Portal then pushed the files into a specific submissions folder in Frame.io, with all metadata entered in Jotform propagated into the MAM.
Note: This workflow was developed prior to MASV’s introduction of upload rules for every Portal. These rules now allow admins to add terms of service/consent documents to any Portal, and combine with MASV custom forms to collect and retain metadata throughout a content ingestion workflow.
A fast, reliable way to send and receive files
MASV provided the file transfer functionality required by the documentary team to collect thousands of UGC clips quickly and reliably, without fans having to wait for slow file transfers or retry failed uploads.
- MASV has zero limits on file sizes or the number of files that can be uploaded.
- MASV cloud-native transfer leverages Amazon Web Services (AWS) global cloud infrastructure, allowing transfer speeds of up to 10 Gbps.
- MASV’s relentless retries means interrupted uploads are constantly retried until the transfer is complete, and checkpoint restart assures that any interrupted upload restarts where it left off—not from the beginning.
“MASV worked fabulously,” says Director William Miller.
Secure, flexible, web-based upload Portals
MASV Portals turned out to be the secret sauce for collecting UGC from hundreds of fans. The Diamond Bros were able to spin up a MASV Portal branded with their own colors and logo, and their drag-and-drop usability meant that any fan—no matter their level of technical expertise—could easily upload content without needing help.
- Fans also don’t need a MASV login to upload content to a Portal, and Portal owners can set strict user permissions on those who do log in, so The Diamond Bros didn’t have to worry about exposing third parties to private information.
- While The Diamond Bros assembled a custom workflow involving JotForm to get user consent and collect metadata, their MASV Portal kept this metadata intact and attached to the right clips as they were pushed into Frame.io.
And, as mentioned, MASV Portals now have built-in consent/metadata forms capabilities tailor-made for UGC workflows.
No-code cloud integrations and file transfer automations
The client’s MASV Portal was preconfigured to send content directly into a specific submissions folder within their Frame.io project.
When a piece of content was uploaded via the Portal, a new folder was created within the submissions folder containing the new content and its attached metadata.
This all added up to:
- No manual downloads from the MASV Portal and uploads into Frame.io—content uploaded by users was automatically transferred to the right Frame.io folder.
- The integration was set up with just a couple of clicks—no coding required.
An open, cloud-based platform and custom development
The entire workflow took about a month to assemble, mostly because the MASV engineering team needed to to integrate the client’s Portal with Pipedream.
- The MASV team wrote custom code to ensure Pipedream could interface with the Portal.
- MASV custom code also ensured all file names were automatically appended to include the production team’s content tracking number, ensuring easy discoverability.
“It’s been very successful,” explains Josh.
Reduce Storage Chaos

The Result: Making Moments Special With MASV
Josh says the inclusion of UGC in the documentary helped enhance the story far beyond what it would have been otherwise.
“There are angles and perspectives that you just can’t capture (in a typical shoot),” he says. “It really helps bring people into the moment: The crowd, feeling those things, seeing what they were seeing. It’s that user-generated footage that makes those moments special.”
Ingesting, cataloguing, and adding all that footage to storage would have taken days, he says, without MASV—along with our rock-solid customer and engineering support to help build custom workflows for The Diamond Bros.
“(Interim CEO) Majed and the team were prompt, responsive, and down to help,” he explains. “It’s one thing to say ‘Yeah, we hear your problem.’ But can you solve it? And are you excited to solve my problem? The MASV team helped us immensely on that front.”
