The Importance of Media Management in Editorial

It’s no secret that editorial workflows have largely gone remote.

The majority of projects now see the on-set team, video editors, colorists, VFX artists, finishing artists, and other stakeholders separated by considerable geographic distance.

  1. RAW files transferred from a set must first be processed by a DIT or dailies lab…
  2. Which is then deliver to a remote editorial team…
  3. Who then delivers their edited files to a colorist…
  4. Who then delivers to a VFX artist…

You get the point.

At the same time, post-production professionals adhere to the 3-2-1 backup rule for media, which calls for three versions of every file: Two versions stored locally (on different devices) and a third stored offsite.

All this to say, video teams must constantly share and ingest large media files from a variety of locations, between multiple storages, for backup and editing. And, once a particular collaborator is finished working on the files, they need to do the whole thing over again for every project.

Improved media management

Portals can be customized to restrict uploads based on file size, type, and naming conventions. Form fields can be adjusted to gather unique metadata before ingest, followed by Kyno—a lightweight media asset manager from Jellyfish—to tag media, add metadata, and integrate it into an NLE.

Increased redundancy

Both MASV and Jellyfish can automatically back up ingested media to external cloud storage for increased data redundancy. MASV provides an additional 10-day free backup as a failsafe (extended paid storage options are also available).

The MASV-OWC Jellyfish Workflow Steps

The MASV-OWC workflow enables editorial teams to receive captured media from set and pass it along the production pipeline (and back) using only three tools: MASV for transfer and ingest, Jellyfish as collaborative storage, and Premiere Pro Productions for editing.

  1. To send files and create Portals and automations, users must first have a MASV account (you can sign up for free) and a connected OWC Jellyfish NAS.
  2. Once media is captured, the on-set DIT uploads all footage to a preconfigured MASV Portal (Portal contributors do not require a MASV account).
  3. Video editors have the option to download assets directly from the Portal, either manually or automatically using a Portal download automation.
  4. After editing the footage in Premiere Pro, the editorial team can utilize Adobe Project Manager to export their timeline footage to a MASV Watch Folder and send it to a colorist’s Portal.
  5. If the colorist has set up a Portal download automation, the files will begin downloading automatically, at which point they enter DaVinci Resolve for conforming.
  6. Simultaneously, the editorial team creates VFX plates for the VFX team to work on in software like After Effects, Nuke, or Fusion.
  7. Once the VFX work is completed, the files can be re-uploaded to the same colorist Portal for grading and correction.
  8. After the finalized files, including color and VFX work, are uploaded back to the initial MASV Portal, the project can be reassembled and rendered as final assets within Premiere Pro before being ingested back into the OWC Jellyfish.
  9. Subsequently, individuals connected to the Jellyfish, such as producers or assistant editors, can access the final files for various purposes like feature film production, web deployment, or archiving to LTO or cloud storage.
